Toyota Introduces FT-1 Concept Sports Car - Finally A Supra Successor?

Jan 13, 2014

Toyota unboxed (literally - it came out of a box on stage!) its new FT-1 Concept Sports Car during their press conference at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. First conceived by Calty Design Research, this project has been almost 2 years in making. "The FT-1 is a dream-project for a designer and car enthusiast like myself," said Alex Shen, Calty's Studio Chief Designer. "Our team was heavily influenced by Toyota's sports car past, especially Celica and Supra, and we sought to capture some of that history. It is an aggressive, track-focused sports car concept with a presence that has been amplified for shock and awe."

So with an aggressive stance, dramatic aerodynamic curves, and a clear nod to Formula One racing with its front fascia, Toyota is making a long overdue foray back to the sports car segment with a truly exciting halo car. What does this mean? Finally, after years of clamoring by fans and enthusiasts, it looks like there will be a worthy successor to the beloved Supra, right? Well, not so fast. Toyota has not formally announced any stats or whether there will even be a production version. However FT-1 stands for “Future Toyota,” and the number “1” represents the ultimate. The FT-1 is meant to give a view of Toyota's future direction while building upon Toyota’s past with such memorable cars as the 2000GT, Supra, and Celica, and even drawing inspiration from other concepts such as the FT-HS and the Lexus LF-LC. There may not have been an announcement

To keep the driver feeling connected to the vehicle, a minimalist cockpit design with padding only where necessary and a heads up display are part of the experience.

While we won't actually see the FT-1 on the road there is one way to experience driving this amazing concept - the car will be downloadable and playable on the Playstation's Gran Turismo 6 video game. We hope this is only the beginning and Toyota greenlights a production version which, whether or not is carries the Supra name, will be a kindred spirit to the Supra heritage and experience.

Find Quality Touch Up Paint

Order touch up paint on-line!

All touch up paint is not created equal! The generic paints you buy at auto part stores will likely NOT match your vehicle’s paint exactly. Believe it or not, even the OEM dealers usually stock “close enough” colors. We recommend PaintScratch.com since their high quality paint is freshly made, they custom mix each order for you upon receipt, and they offer a color match guarantee.
